Alexander Korzer-Robinson is an artist that mind-blowingly bridges the divide between traditional and contemporary styles of art, all the while playing on the overlaps of art and sculpture.

True to the antics of a traditional sculptor carving through stone, Alexander Korzer-Robinson develops his works of art from the act of meticulously carving away at his medium, revealing his art through the carved levels of the medium itself. The artist uses antiquarian books as his canvas in this insightful project he conducts, quite literally eviscerating the text and blank/white spaces from the book’s contents and leaving only the pre-existing illustrations, charts, graphs and other visual elements and imagery already present and printed inside of each book. In essence, his sculpture collages are the result of very carefully cut and meticulously constructed layers or pages of the book, composed in seemingly spontaneous and naturally well connected narratives. Alexander Korzer-Robinson’s style of work centers his very personal fascination with creating these narrative scenarios in relatively small formats. His unique approach is inspired by his observation that we, as human beings, create our own past from fragments of reality. He executes this notion within his constructed visual fragments in the antiquarian books he carves into sculptural collages that induce visuals of a surreal and illusionary, somewhat story-telling nature.

”I make book sculptures / cut books by working through a book, page by page, cutting around some of the illustrations while removing others. In this way, I build my composition using only the images found in the book”, says Korzer-Robinson about his carefully crafted working technique. Furthermore, explaining his style of work such that, “by using pre-existing media as a starting point, certain boundaries are set by the material, which I aim to transform through my process. Thus, an encyclopedia can become a window into an alternate world, much like lived reality becomes its alternate in remembered experience. These books, having been stripped of their utilitarian value by the passage of time, regain new purpose. They are no longer tools to learn about the world, but rather a means to gain insight about oneself.”

Now we all know Google as the American multinational corporation that caters to basically the entire world’s internet related services, quite literally everyone’s Go-to and knowledge sponge on matters regarding anything and everything.

Google was founded by two students from Stanford University in California in 1996 and what a long way it has come. Google Inc. currently owns and operates a total of six data centers across the United States, plus another two in Finland and Belgium, currently in the process of building three more data centers in Asia, specifically Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, pending full-fledged operation very soon.

We have here the first ever look inside Google’s hi-tech data centers, a set of photos released by Google for the first time. The world that resides inside these data centers is an exquisite network of strategically organized, beautifully designed, energy channeled womb that houses the world’s internet. Frankly speaking, it really does just look like a neat mesh of a series of tubes interestingly color coordinated with the Google logo, but don’t be fooled. Every last infrastructural element in these data centers is directly responsible for your smooth and pleasant internet experience.

In the beautiful infrastructure that is essentially Google Inc.’s data centers, there lies evidence of remarkable attention detail, what Google is calling ‘the physical internet’. Simply put, every wire and tube serves a unique purpose. The fiber cables that connect all our websites run along the yellow ceiling tubes, the huge steel beams not only support the infrastructure but also help distribute power, and well, the brightly painted tubes aren’t just for fun, but are specifically designated – for example, the pink pipe in the image below transfers water from chillers (left row of green units) to an outside cooling tower. Those cool neon green lights are actually the LEDs glowing from the millions of servers on the internet set up for chilling. It’s all pretty neat, huh? These Google data centers are nothing short of being state of the art web technology warehouses. Impressive.

Have a look at some amazing shots below of the inside of the womb of all internet technology. Infact, make sure you check out Google’s own extensive gallery here.

With the flame of a candle, he produces a blasting path of smoke over the surface, manipulating the imprint it leaves. In the various section of the arts, one can anticipate about anything and everything, but you will rarely see such a fine combination of material and skill.

Even though Steven Spaznuk works carefully with the damaging effects of fire, the most important part of his technique necessitates that the paper itself not be burnt, but only marked and imprinted with the smoke of fire. This act of creative appearance discloses mesmerizing works of art and genius as a result of wonderful control over the material and the will of his hands.

Whether you are a designer or a visual art enthusiast, it is likely you have been taken, at some point or another, by the remarkable relationship between typography and design. These two, when creatively met together, have the ability to unleash a whole world of visual artistry.

Ji Lee is a graphic designer who experiments with ideas of creative image logos made purely from the use of text and font. Ji Lee sets out to essentially define the meaning of the words he has used in the visual imagery of the text itself, plainly expressed in to what they are.

Ji Lee talks about the quintessential challenge in his work, the process of effectively visualizing the meaning of a word with the aid of only the graphic elements of the letters forming the word itself and no external elements. This act will directly result in the visual translation of word as image. The logo itself is selected to perfectly fit the words and what they represent, forming a creative visualization of type and image with respective meaning in the most minimalist manner.

Lee first began working on this project some twenty years ago, as a student in art school working an assignment in his typography class. The purpose of this assignment was to encourage students to see letters and text beyond their “dull, practical functionality”. It proved to be a very challenging and often frustrating mental and visual exercise for Lee. By the end of it however, he recalls how inspired he felt after finally “cracking” a word. This sense of successful accomplishment is what motivated Ji Lee to pursue the exploration of word as image as a lifelong project.

In 2011, Ji Lee finally published a book called ‘Word as Image’, a compilation of his fascination with executing meaningful word imagery over the years. Have a look at some of his work be and be inspired yourself.

Icons are practically the most widely available online freebies on the web. They’re clean, they’re simple and to the point. We are faced with the temptation to download these readymade icons whenever we like, making our lives significantly easier. As designers however, it is of utmost importance that we possess at least a very basic knowledge of how to go about making our own icons, starting from the very basic and common icons we know and recognize to our very own customized and stylized icon designs.

Icons are the backbone of UID (User Interface Design), being the very essential tool in the designing of user interfaces. These icons serve the basic and momentously important purpose of performing as effective visual cues that will direct and navigate the user to the desired or specified location. Icons serve as a very important element in major areas of design such as web design. Incorporating these icons effectively in to your design will result in the successful achievement of a professionally and solidly designed web site and graphic interface, only furthering the opportunities for gaining traffic and earning clients.

Designing icons can at times be a challenging task. Although they appear small and simple at a glance, a considerable amount of effort, planning and detail goes in to revealing the final, clean-cut result. Icons are generally very detailed and high quality, which is why they give such a fine and neat appearance when seen in smaller scale. For this purpose, we have put together a fine list of Icon design tutorials that will guide you through crafting an icon from beginning to end through a comprehensive, step by step process. These icon tutorials are built using Adobe Illustrator, the most hands-on and efficient tool for graphic designers. With more than 25 Illustrator i¬con tutorials waiting for you below, you’ll get a hang of icon designing from scratch on your own, whether they’re your simple, everyday icons (such as folders, menu icons, clocks, etc) that you simply must master; and when you’re ready to take a step further, you can plunge in to the world of creating your very own customized, high quality and detailed icon designs.

It is no news that artists are coming up with new and inventive ways of creating art. Daniel Adgag is one of such artists. Sculpture is a form of art that has always been open to the creative erection of three dimensional forms with the use of diverse mediums. Daniel Adgag is an artist that has taken the art of sculpting to a whole new level. Adgag’s unique style of work is based on the intricate and detailed construction of sculptures made from cardboard.

Melbourne based artist Daniel Adgag is an award winning creator of stop-motion films, and this series is a part of his latest work titled ‘Sets for a Film I’ll Never Make’, wherein a number of his cardboard sculptures are currently being featured since the opening night on October 26th, 2012. Daniel Adgag may at first appear to be fashioning from something quite simple and even easy, it’s just cardboard after all. Wrong. It is not just cardboard. The absurd level of complexity and detail Daniel Adgag has invested in this project is truly remarkable, entirely pushing the creative limits of the medium itself. Daniel Adgag’s work is a testament to the fact that the possibilities in creating art are endless. He goes about his unique style of work by carefully crafting layers of boxboard with PVA glue to ultimately reveal the exquisitely constructed sculptures. Daniel Adgag refers to his working style and technique as “sketching with cardboard”, miraculously creating these cardboard structures without following any sort of detailed plan or drawings beforehand. His work is improvised entirely as he works in the flow of creation.

If you should wish to see his spectacular cardboard sculptures firsthand and are within proximity of the area, don’t miss out on his showing at Off the Kerb Gallery starting from October 26, 2012, in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Collingwood. In the meantime however, make sure to have a good look at some of his exquisite work below.
